| The Sign Ordinance section of the Springfield
Zoning Ordinance adopted by the Springfield City Council in July 2001, limits the display
of temporary signs, including real estate signs, in the following manner: |

The total square footage of signs allowed on each lot is limited:
- Signs located on lots zoned for single family or duplex structures (R-1 and R-2 zoning
districts) are limited to twelve square feet total, for instance a 3’ X 4’ sign totals 12
square feet.
- Signs located on lots zoned for apartment buildings and offices (R-3 and OFF zoning
districts) are limited to 50 square feet, for instance a 5’ X 10’ sign totals 50 square feet.
- Signs located on lots zoned for commercial purposes (S-1, S-2, S-3 and B-1 zoning
district) are limited to 100 square feet for instance a 10’ X 10’ sign totals 100 square feet.
- Signs in lots zoned for heavy commercial or industrial purposes (B-2, I-1 and I-2
zoning districts) are limited to 200 square feet for instance a 10’ X 20’ sign totals 200 square feet.
More than one sign is allowed on a lot, for instance on a corner lot you may face a sign
towards each street. However, the total square feet for all signs on the lot should not exceed
to total square footage allowed.

When determining the size of a sign, only one side of the sign is counted:
- A 1’ X 2’ sign is two square feet.
- A 4’ X 8’ sign is thirty-two square feet.
- A 10’ X 10’ sign is one hundred square feet.

Signs must be removed within two weeks following the closing of the real estate sale.
Signs should be designed to be stable in all weather conditions, including high winds.
Signs should not be displayed in a way that they create a hazard.
Signs should not obstruct or impair access to a sidewalk, street, driveway, traffic control sign, bus stop or fire hydrant.
Signs should not be illuminated.Signs should be displayed on the lot, which is for sale, not in the right-of-way.
