In the busiest second quarter of home sales ever, Springfield area Realtors are taking time out of their busy work schedules to fundraise, help in the construction and feed volunteers at the newest Habitat for Humanity home. The project, named “Hands for Humanity”, is located in the new Habitat subdivision at 1400 Fuller Court.
The Capital Area Association of REALTORS became interested in a Habitat project a year ago, and contacted Habitat for Humanity at that time. Fundraising by the REALTORS yielded over $13,000 toward the project, making them the major partner in this endeavor. Association President Rick Hanselman said, “This is a good opportunity for the REALTORS to give back to the Community in a meaningful way.” Fundraising included individual REALTOR donations and a fundraising event. Other Sponsors include Blackburn College, First General Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Lincoln Land Community College, University of Illinois at Springfield and Wal-Mart Super Center.
The home will be under construction through November 4, and over 200 volunteers are scheduled to help complete the home. The colleges have quite a few youth builders participating in the project, many of which are veteran Habitat builders. Wal-Mart became interested in participating in the project because the home owner is one of their employees, and the local Wal-Mart wanted to “give back” to one of their employees that gives so much to his job.
Volunteer are still needed for the build, and can become involved in the project by calling Susan Madison at 787-7215 or Jean Jachino at 787-5111.
